A magnificent win for Manor
which was long overdue, was rightly celebrated in style
by both players and fans alike. Manor fielding yet another
changed side from last Saturday started brightly and
began dominating the midfield area causing Brentwood
to remain defending for long periods of the first half.
The Manor were unlucky not to take the lead when Grant
Smith passed a looping ball into the Box and New Boy
Sammy McCarthy making his Debut just shooting wide of
the post. Manor kept the pressure up and looked more
the likely to score first, then against the run of play
a loose ball down the middle from a free kick deep in
Brentwood's own half caught the Manor defence napping
and Brentwood made it one nil up. Brentwood gaining
confidence by the minute controlled the game with some
intelligent passing. 10 minutes before the half Midford
came close with a sweeping header just off the Brentwood
bar. with the last few minutes remaining on the clock,
Brentwood after a good build up sent a ball down the
left, pulling the ball in to the Manor 20 yard area
and whipped in a fierce cross to be met with a Brentwood
striker taking it around two Manor defenders and striking
the back of the net. With almost the last kick of the
first half Lee Whitelock collected the ball and charged
down the left hand side and knocked a perfectly weighted
ball to Johnny Quinn who twisted and turned to make
an opening and appeared to mis-hit the ball straight
to a Brentwood defender who cleared it off the line.
The second half Manor had it
all to do, 0-2 down and against the wind! The Manor
boys with Manager Whitelocks words still ringing in
their ears! started very brightly with a cross from
Smith from the right which Pamplin rose to meet and
sent a powerful header into the top corner beyond the
keeper and just clipping the bar. With the rain and
wind picking up the Manor players dug deep, with inspirational
Skipper Gary Scales encouraging and motivating the players
and then it finally happened! a long ball down the right
met by midfield dynamo Lee Whitelock who took on two
Brentwood players and passed a perfect ball to Sammy
McCarthy who stroked the ball into the back of the net.
Now 1-2 to Brentwood and the Manor could sniff an equaliser,
5 minutes later after some fantastic work in midfield,
Lewis Passfield planted a superb shot into the net 2-2.
Now with the bit between their teeth Manor started to
dominate play. Another attack on the Brentwood goal,
and the defender blatantly stopped a pass with his hand
in his own area, "shouts" went up for a penalty
only to be waved on by the referee? Once the ball went
out of play Lewis Passfiiefld was cautioned for dissent
his second yellow of the game and Manor were down to
10 men! Not fazed by this still kept the pressure up
on Brentwood as the Manor rained in on the Brentwood
goal. With 20 minutes to go Pamplin was causing the
away side a massive headache as he blended into the
Brentwood penalty area, then struck a beautiful half
volley in to the net 3-2 to The Manor and 15 minutes
on the clock. On the odd occasion when Brentwood broke
through, they found Manor keeper Carl Prince in fine
form and with Marsh, Barrett, Midford, and Scales these
four were outstanding for Manor all afternoon, playing
some quality football and then breaking up any threat
the away side looked like making. With 10 minutes left
to play Whitelock collected the ball from the half way
line and sent the ball wide to McCarthy who did a nice
one two with Quinney and then planted Manors 4th goal
and his second. With the Manor now full of confidence
and playing some really pretty football, another nice
build up crossing the ball deep into the Brentwood half,
and Asa Pamplin stepped up for his second of the afternoon
and Manor's 5th for the afternoon. With the last few
minutes of the clock ticking Quinney broke free down
the left and sent McCarthy away down the centre who
struck the ball and clipped the side of the post nearly
getting his hatrick on his debut.
What a game and what an afternoons
entertainment. Real gutsy football from the Manor boys
today and full credit to the whole team for their performances.
Manor M.O.M went to Skipper Gary Scales for his leadership
and toughness in defence. Also a truly outstanding midfield
performance from Lee Whitelock who is improving with
every game. A special mention to Tony Marsh and Chris
Barrett who were solid in defence.
