Saturday 18th February 2006

The Manor back to winning ways on a marshy pitch at St Chads. Graham Chester’s 78th minute strike lifts the recent gloom and puts a smile back on the face of Manager Kirk Whitelock who said after the game “Delighted with the performance, we stuck at it and in the end got our just desserts. We deserved it as well, as our attitude was spot on. Disappointed with Ricky at the end, as he should have known better, but won’t dwell on the negatives.”

A great improvement on recent weeks, but even so Manor leaves it late to claim the points. Not even Defreitas’s dismissal in a niggly final minute, can take the gloss off a polished performance from the Braves.

Ironically, ASPA start the brighter, the Manor side lacking height and struggle to contain a much taller ASPA side at set pieces.

8 minutes – ASPA with opening salvo of an end to end encounter, ball well wide of Carl Prince’s post.

11 minutes – Prince’s only mistakes in an otherwise faultless performance. Scuffs clearance, but ASPA unable to capitalise.

17 minutes – Ricky Defreitas has the Braves first shot on target, parried unconvincingly by the ASPA keeper.

First quarter gone, ASPA on top but Manor looking dangerous on the break.
Defreitas finding some space round the back of the ASPA defence, but can’t find the finish to match his industrious work.

32 minutes – Nicholls and Quinn work opening, resulting corner sees Lee Smith unable to bundle home from close range.

Spell of Manor pressure, Lenny Nicholls tries his luck from long range after some good work from Matty Spicer.

35 minutes – Moment of indecision between Spicer and Jenkins, Prince saves blushes as paws away low strike – Thursday’s intensive workout already paying dividends.

37 minutes – Quinn goes for accuracy over power, is nearly rewarded as ball squirms under ASPA keeper’s body. Celebrations cut short as ball ends up wrong side of post.

45 minutes – Quinn goes for repeat of 25 yard screamer v Bowers, Luck’s out this time, ball clears bar by inches.

Half-time interesting half. ASPA edging, but the Braves finishing the strongest. Manor technical staff ram home the message “Game is there for the taking”

Second half, still real ebb and flow to the game. Pitch getting heavier, as Manor look the strongest outfit.

53 minutes – ASPA defender appears to block ball with both hands. Manor bench upset as penalty appeals waved away.

Hour gone – Tactical change for the Manor. Charlie Tarten replaced by debutant Ryan Wrych after hard working contribution.

61 minutes – Best moment of the game, Quinny slips inside ball to Lenny Nicholls, first time effort inches off the mark.

70 minutes – Second Manor substitution, Assistant Manager, Graham Chester on for Lenny Nicholls. Chester influential as Manor look to turn the screw, goes close to scoring but well struck effort is blocked.

Into the last 15, the Manor now firmly on top. Matty Spicer looking good as the Braves press for a winner.

75 minutes – Final Manor change – Re-shuffle as Stephen Parker on for Sam Williams, shows some neat touches but time running out.

78 minutes – Goal at last and it’s richly deserved. Good work by Jenkins, finds Spicer on the right, terrific driven cross too hot for ASPA keeper to handle, Chester on hand to rifle home the rebound.

90 minutes – Chester again carves out opening from Defrieitas, ASPA keeper wins one on one dual.

92 minutes – Defreitas dismissed as manor attempt to wind down clock. Double sending off as match ends in controversy.

Last word for Whitelock “All in all, well pleased. Matty Spicer and Quinny done well. Jamie Wallace as always is quality; even old boy Jenko came up with the goods today, as I’m sure he’ll let us know – A good day’s work”.

Manor Man of the Match Matty Spicer – Two good feet, is getting fitter every game.
