FA Cup - First Preliminary Round

Saturday 4th September 2004

This match looked to be heading only one way, in favour of the home side. But true to form the F.A.Cup turned the form book on it’s head and Cornard went home the victors. If this match had been a fight it would have been stopped before half time, with no disrespect to the visitors, they came off at the break a goal down and still in with a chance, when the game should have been dead and buried. The chance ratio in the first half alone was 12 attempts on target for Manor and two for Cornard, at least 6 of these chances should have been converted, as they seemed easier to score than miss. Armstrong, Marks, Quinn & Morris all had efforts that were either saved or went extremely close, but the main culprit of missed chances was Delroy Forde, if he would have converted just half of his attempts Manor would still have come a way with a comfortable win. With two players sent off again, Manor seemed destined this season not to finish a game with 11 men on the pitch, Wadud Ahmed dismissed for a professional foul on 30mins ( extremely harsh, as the tackle was made some 25yds from goal, with two covering defenders, it’s hard to see how the player was denied a goal scoring opportunity) with a player down, Manor still had the upper hand in a game that looked to be heading their way despite having only 10 men on the pitch. Sure enough and with Forde still failing to convert any chance that fell his way the inevitable happened, a great solo run ended with a 30yd rocket of a shot nestling in the top corner of the Manor net 1-1. with the game seeming to be heading for a replay, Manor’s James Morris was dismissed for kicking an opponent, Cornard then seized their chance, when they broke through the Manor offside trap and went 2-1 to the good. Disheartened but not down, Manor pushed for the equaliser, but it seemed that a cup exit was on the cards, as Manor went looking for a goal, the visitors cashed in and scored a third, game over. Mom, went to both Nicky Mitchell & Tony Marsh, both 110% players, just need a few more like them and we’ll be ok.

Manor MOM : Nicky Mitchell & Tony Marsh, 110% effort from both players.
